In case you’re running the RC version of Windows 7, then you already know (at least you should) that starting March 1, 2010 your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Your work will not be saved during the shutdown. It will fully expired on June 1, 2010.

It means that you should install a new version of Windows 7. But what will happen with all your applications and their settings. You can use existing Windows tools to transfer the essential components (files, photos, music, videos, documents and your account).

In addition, you can and should use the Import and Export Wizard for Windows Live Writer. It will easily help you to export all the current settings. After installing the new OS you will run it again and import the settings again.

I wish you all to have the smooth installation process !

I’ve just released a new and improved version of my µTorrent Web UI for iPhone.

As you know, a new version of uTorrent was released recently (uTorrent 2.0). I’ve upgraded it on my PC to version 2.0 and made sure that my Web UI for iPhone was compatible with it. It was working great and I’ve released a tiny update (1.4).

However when you install a new and clean installation of uTorrent 2.0 it comes with a newer version of Web UI and I’ve just discovered it (thank you Kevin ). I’ve run some tests and fixed some minor issues and now releasing a version fully compatible with uTorrent 2.0

It’s also possible now to specify torrent label. Just click on the label field at Torrent Properties page and a pop up will appear where you can set a new label. To remove label specify empty value.

Thanks for all feedback and comments.

Enjoy !

My very popular uTorrent Web UI for iPhone web app has been out there for a while now (still having dozens of downloads every day). Thank you all.

At the moment in order to use it you have to be connected to your local network using Wi-Fi. Quite often I find myself wanting to use it even outside my network – from Wi-Fi in some coffee shop, shopping mall or my friend’s place. I can do it if I know the IP Address of PC running the uTorrent client and the port number and all this should be configured beforehand (which also involves firewall configuration). Another issue is that the IP address can change very often (unless you’ve got dedicated IP) and this depends on your ISP. And when it changes I need to change the URL in the Safari browser in order to navigate to this app.

My new vision is to have one URL that will be used to connect to uTorrent client. I want to configure it once and it will always give me access to my downloads. There’s no need to check whether my IP changed. Simple and easy. One URL which can also be connected to multiple uTorrent clients.

What do you think, dear reader ? Would you like to have something like this ?

Share your thoughts here or just leave a comment.

Thanks

First of all, I wish to express my gratitude to all those who have commented on this product and/or sent me several emails regarding new features and ideas. In addition I am very thankful and grateful to all those generous donations from you. Thank you for your support and encouragement. I appreciate it a lot.

Wish you all great holidays and a Happy New Year 2010 ! Have a year full of new and wonderful experiences.

I’ve just released a new and improved version of my µTorrent Web UI for iPhone.

So, what’s new in this version ?

Automatic version check

You do not need to leave this app in order to check for latest updates. Not anymore. The version check is performed automatically and you will get notified.

Preferences

Two more additions to the Preferences screen:

Scheduler: Allows you to enable/disable the scheduler in the uTorrent client.

Sorting: Now you can configure how to sort your torrents (by Title/ ID in Queue/ Size).

Add Torrent

You can easily add new torrents to download by clicking on Add Torrent button.

In my opinion the best and simple way to do this is by copying link of torrent file to clipboard and then come to this app and use the Paste feature to insert it into the Torrent Url field. Click on the Add Torrent to add it.

Buttons are more responsive now and easier to touch.

Enjoy !

Click here to download the latest version.

What’s new ?

Multi-language support

You can easily choose your language from available languages (same as in uTorrent).

Show files list for each torrent

The torrent details page now contains a new button at the top right corner named Files. When clicked it will display a list of files for current torrent. For each file in the list you can specify its download priority.

Latest version check

At the main page (dashboard) click on the About button. A new About page contains a link for new version check. This way you can always stay up to date.

Windows Vista introduced a new native API that allows developers to retrieve system-defined Shell icons: SHGetStockIconInfo. Those icons are stored in %SystemRoot%\System32\ImageRes.dll

You can use various icon management utilities to extract these icons from there and use it in your own products thus providing the same UX for users like the one they used to in Windows. (I believe changing these icons in this DLL file will result in seeing them everywhere in Windows).

Developers should use system API to extract these icons. However sometimes you just want to use an individual icon in one of your applications and you don’t want to have any interaction with the API calls. For your convenience I have extracted these icons for you and they are listed below. Use navigation buttons to see icons in all pages. Each icon can be downloaded in its original format – .ICO

Hope you will find it useful.

In case you’re like me and like typing your HTML manually without the use of the Designer then you may find the following tip very useful and handy. When you add an attribute inside any element and put the equal sign “=” Visual Studio can automatically insert quotes (opening and closing) for you and put the cursor between them. This way you can type the attribute value right away without wasting any time.

How to enable this

Open Visual Studio 2008

Navigate to Tools –> Options

Check the checkbox named “Show all settings” at the left bottom corner of the window

Expand the Text Editor tag

Expand the HTML tag

Click on the Format sub menu item

At the Automatic formatting options section check the first checkbox named Insert attribute value quotes when typing (I personally have all options checked in this section)

I like this feature a lot since it increases my productivity and makes HTML editing much pleasant.
