My very popular uTorrent Web UI for iPhone web app has been out there for a while now (still having dozens of downloads every day). Thank you all.

At the moment in order to use it you have to be connected to your local network using Wi-Fi. Quite often I find myself wanting to use it even outside my network – from Wi-Fi in some coffee shop, shopping mall or my friend’s place. I can do it if I know the IP Address of PC running the uTorrent client and the port number and all this should be configured beforehand (which also involves firewall configuration). Another issue is that the IP address can change very often (unless you’ve got dedicated IP) and this depends on your ISP. And when it changes I need to change the URL in the Safari browser in order to navigate to this app.

My new vision is to have one URL that will be used to connect to uTorrent client. I want to configure it once and it will always give me access to my downloads. There’s no need to check whether my IP changed. Simple and easy. One URL which can also be connected to multiple uTorrent clients.

In my opinion µTorrent is the best torrent client available today. It’s very lightweight and does not consume a lot of resources. I can easily have it running and keep working easily on other things. And of course I download only from Legal Torrents.

µTorrent comes with a built-in Web UI which allows you to control your client from anywhere using the web browser. The web interface is very powerful and exposes all the necessary features you need to operate the client remotely.

Unfortunately this Web UI is not displayed correctly on iPhone. I needed a web app for iPhone that will have the familiar look & feel and provide the same features as the original one.

There are several solutions out there that you can use but I wanted app designed specifically for iPhone. Not just render correctly on it but give the feeling that of native iPhone web app. This is when I’ve decided to write it on my own from scratch. The journey was not very easy but it was definitely exciting one.

How to use

On your iPhone/iPod Touch, navigate to the Safari browser and type in the URL to the new web app. The structure of the URL is in the following  format:

http://{IP address}:{port}/gui/iphone.html

For example: http://10.0.0.9:12300/gui/iphone.html

where {IP address} is the IP address or host name of the computer running the uTorrent client and {port} is the port number to which the client is listening to.

After opening it for the first time it is recommended to add the page to the Home Screen in iPhone.

Automatic installation (for Windows users only)

iPhoneWebUI(1.5).exe (~282Kb)

Download and run the above executable file.

Manual installation  (for all OS users) click to display

iPhoneWebUI(1.5).zip (~38Kb)

1) Download the above ZIP file and extract its contents to the temporary folder.

2) Navigate to the uTorrent application folder.
      It can be found at %AppData%\uTorrent
      or at C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming\uTorrent

3) Locate there a file named webui.zip

4) Open the above file in any ZIP utility (like 7-Zip, WinZip, WinRAR) and drag there the contents of the downloaded file.

5) The final contents of the webui.zip file will be as below:

6) On your iPhone, navigate to the Safari browser and type in the URL to the new web app.
